Merce Cunningham/Sonic Youth/John Paul Jones

Saw a pretty interesting show at BAM last night. It was a 90th birthday celebration for the iconic choreographer Merce Cunningham and featured live music by Sonic Youth and John Paul Johns. JPJ's contribution sounded like some ambient electronic music that had been prerecorded but as the show went on there was a nice video projection of what he was actually doing. At one point he had a metal tray with contact mics on it and was shaking a key back and forth and had a couple of rubber bands stretched across. Sounded pretty unbelievable though the sound system. Couldn't see what else he was using, as he was on top of this spaceship-like structure in the back of the stage. Sonic Youth were also installed on this and were their usual noisy awesome selves. The abuse they give their guitars is truly scary and make me want to start taking a screwdriver and other random tools to my instruments.

Peter Gabriel

On the same tip here's Peter Gabriel smashing TVs and talking about sound in music. Very cool.

Herbie & Fairlight

While I know this is not strictly guitar I love this video of Herbie Hancock showing Quincy Jones his Fairlight CMI circa 1983. Check out all the great gear in the background too..

Johnny Winter

I found this posted on a friend's facebook page and it kinda blew me away. I don't listen to much blues these days but Johnny Winter is amazing, playing a really interesting blues called 'Key To The Highway'. He has great tone, phrasing, and approach to voicing and melody, plus sings his ass off. Totally worth checking out...I was inspired!

4ms pedals

I happened across the 4ms pedal website. These guys make some of the craziest sounding pedals which come with custom artwork, way too many knobs and a plethora of options. The youtube clips feature some full on sonic-destroforce. I think my favorite was the Nocto Loco. I'm thinking about buying the kit to solder myself....

Carpal Tunnel Stretches

These stretches can be of benefit to any of us that have been playing music for years.
